POV: your auntie loves you too much to not say something. 🫶 Surviving a partner’s strangulation = over 7x the odds of later becoming a homicide victim (Glass et al., J Emerg Med / Johns Hopkins, 2008). Strangulation appeared in 10% of abused women who survived vs. 43% of women killed by a partner. That number is about COERCIVE strangulation but it predicts lethality because of what it reveals about an abuser. Consensual choking is NOT a homicide predictor. Different claim, and I’m not making it. BUT consent doesn’t protect the brain. 2025 study: same women showed elevated neurofilament light (a blood marker of nerve-fiber injury) after choking sex but not non-choking sex. The brain registers oxygen loss regardless of consent (Frontiers in Global Women’s Health, 2025). Over half of college-aged women report being choked during sex; ~1 in 4 first experienced it between ages 12–17 (Herbenick et al.; PLOS One, 2026). “He choked me” sounds like intimacy. “He strangled me” is attempted homicide.
