@wordman.dev: You can hand the agent a perfect architecture doc. It follows it to the letter. The code is still garbage. Dex Horthy on why context alone doesn’t save you. Full ep on YT / Weekly Dev’s Brew #AIcoding #softwareengineering #devtools #coding
I am a Principal Engineer at Amazon. All production code is garbage. Welll factored code is something to look at. The internet runs on garbage.

It doesn’t matter if it works. All that DRY stuff and coding standards and everything else is stuff to make the code readable and maintainable by humans. If the agents can do it then more power to them. You need to nail down the contract that the code conforms to and let everything else slide. You can have the agents backfill with architectural refactoring tasks as they improve if it makes you feel better.

I keep hearing AI built code is garbage, what is the solution to this? Cause the way I see it, due to AI everyone is running to ship something. If I spend the next two years building a solution. By the time I reach the market it is already over saturated. What good is that? I don’t think the customer cares as long as the entire SaaS is SOC 2 compliant or has a couple more certifications.

There are Fortune 500 & beyond using 25 year old code today. I work with them all the time. If it works, clients don’t care.

Did you ask it to review and find leaky abstractions and tramp data? Because it will do that.

I don't know why this surprises anybody. It takes a decade to train a junior developer to write good code, and that's if they read all the books.

I'll take garbage code the model gave me for $100/mo versus garbage code TCS devs give me for 10x that cost.

As others mentioned, how do you define "garbage" in terms of code quality? How do you measure it? Because if you can measure and identify it so can the Agent and probably be a lot more thorough with fixing it than any engineer would be.

Does it matter if the code is garbage? If the system works, performs well, etc, what difference does it make if the code is garbage? I understand the code will be difficult to read by humans. But so is assembly. And most devs never read assembly. Maybe we should stop reading higher-level language code as well.

All I know is for the relatively light purpose-built stuff I make it’s been more than adequate. I think this guy is way over-estimating the code quality of most enterprise software and even some of the bigger, commercial app.

Why does code quality matter if it’s performant? Humans aren’t maintaining it anymore

If garbage code works is it really garbage? You can say it isn’t scalable but ai can refactor code in minutes. You can say it isn’t efficient but if it works fine then Isn’t it efficient enough?

“Hire me, I write fewer leaky abstractions than Claude” is not a viable stance to have in 2026 though. The answer is to write a harness that reliably produces fewer leaky abstractions, in this case, and test its ability to implement architecture docs. You build the constraints and capabilities at a different level of abstraction.

By what metric? Developers judge the code by what they would have written instead. That doesn't mean it's better. We need objective metrics that measure actual performance. But the studies that attempt to do that show that there's nuance and tradeoffs.

If it's shitty and it works, it's not shitty 🤷🏻♂️who are you to judge code quality when the code runs, compiles, activates, doesn't error or leak and works as intended? 🤔

You need linters and lifecycle hooks to keep agents on the patterns you want.

if you are trusting an agent to write code without putting in twice as much time writing a language model skill library to help guide it then you are doing it wrong

I see crappy human code all the time in production. So, I dont get all those clean code posts. AI code is often still better than human garbage code.

But does it work? Bad code isn’t an issue if it costs 1% and can get gone in 2 days rather than 2 months

Duncan McKinnon :
Robust testing coverage and integration and security checks will be more important, but implementation details will be almost irrelevant. Not only is it faster for the agent to build and test the system, but it’s faster for the agent to do minor refactoring as it becomes necessary. If you can check that it works and doesn’t make any easily exploitable mistakes, that’s the bar.
