Cream the butter and sugar until light, fluffy, and pale. 2. Mix in the egg white, milk, and vanilla. 3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, salt, baking soda, and baking powder. 4. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until a soft dough forms. 5. Divide the dough into 3 portions: plain (white), red and blue. 6. Add food colouring a few drops at a time until the colours are vibrant. 7. Roll into small balls and chill for 20–30 minutes in the fridge. 8. Preheat oven to 175°C (350°F). 9. Arrange the dough balls in a flag-inspired pattern. 10. Gently press together and lightly roll to seal the pattern. 11. Roll the dough to approximately 6mm thickness. 12. Cut into circles using a cookie cutter. 13. Chill the cut cookies for another 10 minutes in the fridge. 14. Bake for 9–11 minutes, just until the edges are set. If the cookies spread, use a spoon to push the edges in. 15.
