Guns N’ Roses signed with Geffen Records in late March 1986 (most sources cite March 25 or 26), after a short but intense period of label interest on the Los Angeles club scene, primarily driven by Geffen A&R executive Tom Zutaut. Zutaut (who had previously signed Mötley Crüe) first became aware of the band through a poster or recommendation (accounts vary slightly, including from record-store owner Joseph Brooks/Vinyl Fetish or a tape passed along). He saw them at the Troubadour around February 28, 1986. Impressed after just a couple of songs (including material like “Welcome to the Jungle”), he recognized their potential as a raw rock ’n’ roll band rather than typical hair metal. To throw off competing A&R people present, he reportedly downplayed the band afterward while privately pushing hard to sign them. He told Geffen executives (including David Geffen) they could be bigger than Led Zeppelin and secured approval for a deal. #gunsnroses #geffen #appettitefordestruction #welcometothejungle #geetarworld
