@eyezonrap: After nearly two centuries away, an important Indigenous manuscript documenting Mexica history is back on Mexican soil. The Codex Azcatitlan a richly illustrated manuscript created in the Valley of Mexico during the colonial period, has returned to Mexico for the first time since 1840. It was brought from France’s Bibliothèque nationale de France as part of a cultural exchange marking 200 years of diplomatic relations between Mexico and France. The manuscript combines Indigenous pictographic imagery with alphabetic writing to document major events in Mexica history, including the migration from Aztlán, the founding of Tenochtitlan, the succession of rulers, the arrival of the Spanish and the conquest. The Codex is considered an important surviving source for understanding how Mexica history was recorded and represented during the early colonial period. It is currently being exhibited at Mexico City’s National Museum of Anthropology, where visitors can see it through December 6, 2026. As part of the cultural exchange, Mexico has loaned France the Codex Boturini, another important Indigenous manuscript documenting the Mexica migration. The Azcatitlan will return to France after the exhibition, meaning this historic homecoming is temporary. After spending roughly 186 years outside Mexico, the Codex Azcatitlan is finally being seen by the public in the country whose history it helps preserve. #tenochtitlan #mexicanculture #raza #floridafoos #fyp
