Full Vid on YT! Three and a half days. That’s how long Haeli was held against her will by Moises Gonzalez - beaten, choked, her face shoved into dog feces, threatened with firearms. Moises’s 2yo daughter was right there through all of it and Haeli fought to keep that little girl safe. When Haeli finally had the opportunity to run for her freedom, she was black and blue, unrecognizable, with a fractured wrist and injuries that would have lifelong effects. Moises was arrested on first-degree kidnapping and multiple other charges. He served 2 weeks in county jail. And that was it. No detective ever followed up. No advocate. No one from the DA’s office. There was no trial. No sentencing. No accountability - ever - for what he did to her OR his little girl. Nye County let him walk free while Haeli lived in fear of returning to her own hometown - a place where she also has a business, forcing her to navigate her livelihood alongside her absolute terror. When violence goes unanswered, it creates the conditions for it to happen again. As recently as July 31, Moises was back in the news for going on an active shooting spree in the very same town where he once held Haeli against her will. Moises was handed permission to do this because nothing was ever done to stop him in the first place. That’s what happens when a county chooses not to act: it doesn’t just fail one victim - it emboldens abusers to do it again and again. This isn’t a one-time failure. This is a pattern. I know because I lived it too. Nye County has a documented habit of turning a blind eye to domestic violence and, in doing so, protecting the men who commit it. Haeli and her mom spent 3 years in court to win permanent guardianship of the little girl she protected. That little girl isn’t her blood, but she’s her daughter now. Haeli says: “This story does not make me a victim, it makes me a hero.” I couldn’t agree more. Haeli fought for her life and she fought to save that little girl’s life. Survivors shouldn’t have to be the only ones fighting. Nye County needs to answer for how many times they’ve looked away - and start joining the fight instead. #HaelisStory #NyeCountyInjustices
