Lena's suitcase had become a permanent piece of furniture with it living beside the bedroom wardrobe now. Sometimes it stayed closed for a week. Sometimes Lena came home from one trip, emptied half of it into the washing machine and started packing again before she'd even properly unpacked. Miu never complained. At first, she hadn't minded. Lena had travelled for work when they'd met. It was part of the job. Singapore for two nights. Seoul. Hong Kong. Tokyo. Kuala Lumpur. London once. They'd made it work. Video calls from hotel rooms. Messages from airport lounges. Photographs of terrible room-service dinners. Miu would sometimes wake up to a picture of a sunrise from another country with: -Wish you were here. And she'd smile. Because Lena always came home. That had been enough…for a while. Then the trips became more frequent. Three days away. Two days home. Five days away. One weekend together. Gone again. Their relationship slowly started being measured in arrivals and departures. They stopped making plans more than a week ahead because Lena's schedule changed constantly. Dinner reservations were cancelled. Miu's cousin got married and Lena missed the ceremony because her flight was delayed. Their anniversary dinner happened three days late. And Miu never complained. She told herself Lena wasn't choosing work over her, she was just working. There was a difference. . “You're packing again?” Lena looked over her shoulder to find Miu stood in the bedroom doorway wearing one of Lena's old shirts, hair still messy from sleep. The suitcase was open on the couch as Lena glanced down at it. “Jakarta.” “When?” “Tomorrow morning.” Miu nodded. “How long?” “Three nights.” “Okay.” Lena frowned and Miu disappeared into the bathroom. . Three nights became four as the flight home was delayed. Lena arrived after midnight on Friday to see Miu was asleep on the sofa. Lena smiled when she saw her and she put her bag down quietly, crouched beside the sofa and brushed Miu's hair away from her face. Miu stirred. “You're home.” She mumbled. “I'm home.” Miu smiled sleepily and Lena kissed her. “Come to bed.” Miu wrapped her arms around Lena's neck instead. “Missed you.” Lena's expression softened. “Missed you too.” For a few minutes, none of it mattered. The flights. The time apart. The half-empty suitcase. Lena was home and that was enough. Until Sunday evening. Miu walked into the bedroom and found the suitcase open again. Lena glanced at her. “Chiang Mai.” Miu stared at the clothes spread across the bed. “When?” “Tomorrow.” A small laugh escaped Miu but not because anything was funny. Lena noticed. “What?” “Nothing.” “Miu.” “It's fine.” “It doesn't sound fine.” Miu picked up one of Lena's folded shirts and placed it inside the case. “How long?” “Just three nights, but I land late on Thursday.” Miu nodded, then folded another shirt. Lena caught her wrist gently. “Hey.” Miu looked at her. “What?” “Talk to me.” Miu pulled her hand free. “There's nothing to talk about.” “You're upset.” “I'm tired.” Miu sighed. “Of what?” Miu looked towards the suitcase. “It’s fine, finish packing.” Then she left the room. . The following morning came far to quickly for Miu’s liking. At six-thirty, Lena's suitcase stood by the front door and at six-forty, her phone buzzed. -Your driver has arrived. Lena glanced through the window to see a black car waiting downstairs. Miu was in the kitchen making coffee and Lena walked in already wearing her coat. “I'm leaving.” Miu nodded. “Okay.” Lena hesitated. Usually this was when Miu came over. A kiss. A hug. But this time Miu simply stirred her coffee. Lena walked closer. “Miu. What’s wrong?” “I'm fine.” “You keep saying that.” “Because you keep asking.” Lena's phone buzzed again but she ignored it. “Miu, talk to me.” Miu stared into her coffee. Lena waited and finally, Miu set the spoon down. “I'm tired of saying goodbye.” She whispered. CONTINUATION IN COMMENTS ⬇️ #lenamiu #ThaiGL #wlw #wlwau
