Come on Texas, it’s time to have a serious conversation about legalizing and responsibly taxing cannabis. Instead of continuing to place more financial pressure on homeowners and working families through rising property taxes, Texas should consider additional sources of revenue. A regulated cannabis market could generate tax revenue that lawmakers could dedicate to priorities such as roads, infrastructure, emergency services, and other essential public needs. This isn’t about left versus right. It’s about looking at the numbers, considering policies that other states have already implemented, and deciding whether Texas can create a system that works for Texans. We should be willing to challenge outdated thinking, have an evidence based discussion, and consider new approaches when the old ones keep putting more pressure on working families. Texas can lead, but only if we’re willing to have the conversation.
