Finally, clear and wise. That's exactly what you do. But one caveat, church environments will insist to talk about you but not to you, implying you somehow dislike one person, or have an issue with one and you're unforgiving. The pattern looks for creating that in your absence. But the person doing that is unforgiving because from the start they wanted a dispute, which is why the snide comments to your face. Good news, if you're prayerful and otherwise silent, you don't have to give importance to the person at any point. It's just cunning in the church as first the person approaches you with flattery, or generous teaching imposing opinions on what you need disguised as wanting to know you, so overly familiar but in church it's kind of expected but not natural either way, I've known healthy friendships come together over time in church because if mutual ways of prayer in silence, you know who you are and observe that across months and years, and that's how healthy friendship develops. So you can simply say professionally and tone neutral "I get to know people over a longer time, I appreciate you are an open heart, but I decide things my way for myself, let's let time work".
