Severe weather in Bangkok is causing wider operational problems at Suvarnabhumi Airport, with ground-handling shortages and baggage delays affecting both arriving and departing flights. Footage from Suvarnabhumi shows a Thai Airways jet accelerating along a rain-soaked runway, throwing up heavy spray during takeoff. Additional video from the airport area shows extensive standing water and flooded surroundings as heavy rain continued across Bangkok. But the biggest disruption has been on the ground. Suvarnabhumi Airport says flooding in parts of Bangkok prevented some Thai Airways ground-handling employees from reaching work, creating a shortage of staff responsible for baggage and aircraft turnaround operations. The problems began on September 26 and continued into September 27, with passengers reporting long waits for checked baggage and large numbers of suitcases accumulating inside the terminal. Photos released by Suvarnabhumi Airport showed delayed bags being sorted by airport and emergency personnel inside the baggage claim area. Some travelers reportedly waited between five and six hours for their luggage, while reduced staffing and baggage-handling problems added further pressure to the operation. Suvarnabhumi says it is coordinating with Thai Airways to bring in additional ground staff, restore normal baggage handling and reduce delays affecting both inbound and outbound services.
