From Sci-Fi to Gotham: The Wild Story of the 1955 Lincoln Futura Imagine a car that looks like it landed from another planet. With its double-bubble canopy, dramatic tail fins, and futuristic nose, the 1955 Lincoln Futura seemed less like a family cruiser and more like a spacecraft on wheels. But this wasn’t a movie prop. It was a real, running concept car and one of the boldest designs to emerge from the Jet Age. A Space-Age Dream In 1955, America was gripped by the Space Race, and car designers were looking to the skies for inspiration. Ford stylists Bill Schmidt and John Najjar helped shape the Futura’s striking design. Ford then sent the project to Italy, where the renowned coachbuilders at Carrozzeria Ghia built the car by hand. The Futura reportedly cost around $250,000 to create a remarkable sum at the time. Its shimmering pearlescent finish, often said to contain fish-scale material, made the car seem to change color in the light. And instead of conventional windows and a roof, it had a clear, twin-bubble canopy that looked straight out of a fighter jet. When the Futura debuted at the Chicago Auto Show in 1955, it offered a vivid vision of the future. A Concept Car That Could Actually Drive The Futura wasn’t just a showpiece. Beneath its dramatic bodywork was a working Lincoln chassis, powered by a 368-cubic-inch V8 engine producing around 300 horsepower. A three-speed automatic transmission sent power to the rear wheels. Its low stance, sweeping body, and independent front suspension gave it the look of a machine built for a world that hadn’t arrived yet. The Futura was experimental in appearance, but it was still a car you could drive. From Lincoln Concept to Batmobile Most concept cars fade from view after their auto-show tour. The Futura’s story took a very different turn. After Ford’s show-car days were over, the car eventually came into the hands of Hollywood customizer George Barris. It reportedly cost him just one dollar. Then, in 1965, television producers came looking for a signature vehicle for a new series called Batman and they needed it fast. Barris saw the Futura’s sweeping fins and cockpit-like canopy and recognized its potential. Rather than start from scratch, he transformed the concept car into the Batmobile. A dark paint job, bright red details, and a collection of crime-fighting gadgets turned the once-blue show car into one of television’s most recognizable vehicles. When Batman premiered in 1966, the Futura’s second life began. A Legacy That Lives On The original Futura never returned to its 1955 appearance. Its transformation into the Batmobile means the car as it appeared at the Chicago Auto Show is gone but its design lives on in photographs, replicas, and automotive history. The blue car pictured above, with its playful “QTURA” California license plate, is a tribute to that original vision. It captures the spirit of an era when designers dared to imagine what the future might look like and then built it on wheels. The Lincoln Futura began as a dream of tomorrow. It ended up driving straight into Gotham City. #luxurycars #vintagecar #classiccar #customcars

Amazing. V8, 300hp. Never went to production. Hand built in Italy for $250k (in 1955). Eventually used as Bat Mobile. Sold for $4.6M at auction in 2013.
