How to speak to a staff member about excessive phone use whilst at work… We live in a world where some phone use at work is to be expected. On occasions though, the degree of use whilst at work may become a cause for concern. As the manager you may receive complaints from other team members. Phone use can be distracting or lead people to question how someone has enough time to be using their phone so much. Here is what I would recommend: 👉 Speak to the staff member about their phone use from a place of curiosity. 👉 Avoid automatically assuming the worst in them and “telling them off”. I say this because you’re human and one of the traps we can all fall into is jumping to conclusions. Sometimes there can be a legitimate reason for excessive phone use. Someone may have things going on in their private life so it’s important to check. 👉 Raise their awareness respectfully. If you have ruled this out any legitimate reasons for high amounts of phone use, raise their awareness of the impact and ask them to be more aware going forward. This could sound like: “While I know this isn’t the case, using your phone so much could give the impression to others that you don’t have enough work and it can also be distracting for people. Can I ask you to be more aware of your phone use going forward?” 💬 Have you ever been in a position like this on either side? What would you add here? 📌 Please remember the advice offered in this video is generalised and will not fit every situation. Therefore, please use your own judgement when using this advice and adapt it to suit your situation. ➕ Follow Claire Benjamin for more strategies on navigating tricky work dynamics #worktips #leadershipdevelopment #emotionalintelligence #corporatelife #difficultconversations #managertips #managingpeople
