@amieinchina: WeChat and Alipay are two of the ‘must download’ apps before going to China, having them already installed and connected with a bank card will make your time in China infinitely more convenient and less stressful. PS: I’m building an in-depth travel guide on everything I know about China after travelling there over 29 times and marrying into a Chinese family. Can you recommend VPN and Esim for upcoming first trip to China. Loving your content ❤️

If you're just visiting China, TenPayGo also works instead of AliPay (and might be easier)

Question. How do we get to use a robot delivery thing in a hotel is it certain hotels. Is it all hotels and whenever you make an order the delivery guy gives it to the robot?

I looked this up online but just want to hear your experience… I don’t need to convert my USD to Chinese RMB, right? I just need to connect my bank card to Alipay & WeChat and the conversion automatically happens when I pay?

alipay for payments and ordering foods because the app have a translation button where you can easily translate everything into english. didi, train ticket, ordering foods, ordering drinks, you can do it all through alipay app.
wechat for communication. the chat translation works the best. but if you're trying to order anything through wechat, it doesn't provide as much english translation as alipay. just say "zhi fu bao" to the vendor, then they will know that you're paying through alipay. any purchase above 200RMB, split it. ask the vendor if you can split the payment into multiple transactions. anything above 200RMB will be subjected to a fee. and the last app is Amap for navigation. these 3 app alone is enough. wechat for communication, amap for navigation, alipay (zhi fu bao) for everything else.

I mostly use Alipay for paying - just made my husband download tenpaygo for our upcoming trip so he has an option without needing WeChat. Looks like it’ll be easy for transport but we’ll see. I’ve had problems in the past with bus tickets and bikes without a Chinese number

There's another thing you didn't mention, which is regional differences. In many rural areas of China, people almost only use WeChat Pay, so you'll see a lot of elderly vendors in really small towns or villages only accepting WeChat payments because they don't have Alipay or don't even know about it. Just like in the west, everyone has Facebook or Instagram, but not everyone has PayPal.

You don’t really need WeChat. If you have Alipay that’s enough
