40 years ago today, on April 26, 1986, the Chernobyl disaster began during a late night safety test at Reactor No. 4. A combination of design flaws in the RBMK reactor and human mistakes caused a sudden power surge. The disaster led to long-term health effects, including increased thyroid cancer cases, especially among children exposed to radioactive iodine. The events were later brought to global attention through the series Chernobyl, which showed how small decisions, ignored warnings, and secrecy contributed to one of the worst nuclear disasters in history. Even four decades later, Chernobyl remains a powerful reminder of how fragile safety can be when responsibility is overlooked.
