DANIEL MCLAREN NEWBURY INFANT SHAKING MURDER In January 2018, Daniel McLaren, 30, a bricklayer from Newbury, Berkshire, was convicted at Reading Crown Court of the murder of his four-and-a-half-month-old son, Jack McLaren. A unanimous jury also found him guilty of causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent regarding a separate series of physical assaults against another child. INTENSIVE SHAKING TRAUMA AND THE TIMELINE OF DELAY An investigation led by Thames Valley Police established that on 2 June 2017, McLaren was left alone with his infant son at their home in Fleetwood Close, Newbury, while the child's mother was out. At 7:30 pm, McLaren made an emergency call to 999, claiming the baby had suddenly choked on his milk bottle. Jack was rushed to the hospital but died from catastrophic brain damage. Forensic pathologists and medical experts thoroughly debunked McLaren's cover story, proving the cause of death was severe "shaking impact type" trauma. Medical evidence also exposed a history of physical abuse, revealing both recent and older brain injuries. Furthermore, a digital forensic audit of McLaren’s mobile phone exposed a series of internet searches—including "why is my baby's tongue blue?"—proving he had deliberately researched the infant's life-threatening symptoms long before dialing for emergency assistance. READING CROWN COURT LIFE SENTENCING Following a trial lasting nearly two weeks, the jury rejected McLaren's claims of a feeding accident. The judge noted that McLaren had grossly abused his privileged position as a parent to inflict extreme violence against defenceless infants. He was sentenced to a mandatory life imprisonment term. STATUS AND CASE DETAILS Legal Status: CONVICTED (Murder; Section 18 GBH with intent). Custodial Status: JAILED FOR LIFE (Sentenced in January 2018 to life imprisonment). DBS Status: Placed on the Barred List (Indefinite and permanent ban from any role involving children or regulated activity). Judicial Oversight: Sentenced at Reading Crown Court; investigated by Detective Superintendent Nick John. Origin: Newbury, Berkshire. PRISON STATUS AND PUBLIC BARB McLaren remains incarcerated within the secure UK prison estate serving his mandatory life sentence. Due to the severe nature of his conduct and his conviction for multi-victim child abuse, his prison security classification is tightly managed. His physical profile, DNA, and fingerprints are permanently logged on national criminal databases. The courts have placed an absolute, indefinite ban preventing McLaren from ever having unmonitored contact with children. Any eventual consideration for release at the expiry of his minimum tariff will require an exhaustive psychological risk evaluation by the Parole Board to determine if he remains an active danger to the vulnerable. 💬 WHAT DO YOU THINK? Given that this individual researched his dying infant's symptoms on his phone before calling emergency services, do you believe child killers should automatically face a whole-life order with zero chance of parole? Came back and did it a second time 👇 FULL CASE DETAILS BELOW 👇 A 31-year-old asylum seeker who carried out a sustained attempted rape on a woman near a subway in Hereford has received a nine-year extended sentence. Worcester Crown Court heard that Mehmet Bulut, of no fixed address, Herefordshire, stalked the woman at 4am on 2 August before launching an assault recorded on CCTV. Bulut removed items of her clothing, walked away, and then returned to attack her a second time, telling his terrified victim "just sex, just sex". The court heard Bulut crossed the Channel illegally via small boat in December 2022 and was an absconder whose asylum claim had been withdrawn. Bulut pleaded guilty to attempted rape. Judge Simon Drew KC classified him as a dangerous offender, sentencing him to six years in custody with a three-year extended licence ahead of expected deportation.
