It ended in a security pact, not a sale. On 22 September 2026 at the UN, Trump and the leaders of Denmark and Greenland signed an agreement that expands permanent U.S. military access, basing, and overflight rights on the island, bars adversaries such as Russia and China from bases and sensitive investments, and keeps those terms in force even if Greenland later becomes independent. No territory changed hands. Danish sovereignty stayed intact, and the deal still needs parliamentary approval in Denmark and Greenland. Trump called it permanent U.S. control over Greenland’s security; Denmark described the same text as preserving its sovereignty under an updated version of the old 1951 defense arrangement.
