Where No One Stands Alone (Hymns & Beers Sessions) is live over on YouTube. I recorded this one at Fox & Locke (bar), which feels pretty fitting with the announcement of the album. Last year, when I was trying to decide whether to make this album, I was wrestling with the fact that I’m a country artist. I want to make country music, but I really wanted my first album to be a hymns album. I was worried to death about what people would think, but the idea just wouldn’t escape my mind. One Sunday, I went out to Leipers Fork with my Bible, planning to eat lunch, sit by myself, and have a heart to heart with God about it. Well… when I got there, I ran into @marknesler and @jenniferpittmannesler They invited me to sit with them and eat, and I thought, well, there went my plans to sit and talk to God. But I love them dearly so I didn’t mind much! They brought up me singing hymns, and I told them I wanted to make a hymnal album, but I didn’t want people thinking I was going gospel. I still wanted to sing about country things and the life that comes with it. Mr. Mark said “shoot, back in the day every Sunday after church at Fox & Locke people would gather and sing hymns and drink beer.” That was my “aha” moment. I thought, now that sounds like something I’d partake in. An everyday-people kind of thing. I thought Merle Haggard would’ve eaten that up! Right then and there, I decided I was gonna make the album. Hymns From a Barstool was written shortly after! God works in mysterious ways. I didn’t need to sit with myself that day—I needed to run into Mr. Mark and Mrs. Jennifer.
