@kaylatheshow: The term for black Americans has changed over time and so has who was actually considered black. In the Greatest Showman, zendaya’s character was treated as black but technically she would have operated a bit differently under the laws at the time. #tiktokfantasymoviecontest

you should 100% do a video on why the term for black people has changed so much. that would be a really cool linguistic & history lesson.

I’m Spanish and I didn’t know the word’s origin. I won’t be using the word anymore, it’s very normalized here so I didn’t think too much of it

That’s because the 13 colonies is different than Spanish territory, which is different in French territory. They all had their own laws and their versions of reclassification.

it's "funny" because it's fully based on the believe genes would be given further by the parents split evenly 50/50, which is nowadays known to be entirely untrue

There is another theory for the origin of 'mulatto', 'mulato' in Spanish coming from Arabic 'muwallad' for kids of one Muslim parent and another from a different faith. In Spanish it was translated as 'muladí' and it is believed 'mulato' could 've also come from there.

having a word for the type of black doesn't change that mixed people were viewed as black back then. we also have a word for it now... mixed. still viewed as black.
