Retired New York City financier Howard Rubin has been indicted on ten federal charges, including sex trafficking, prostitution-related offenses, and bank fraud. Prosecutors allege that from 2009 to 2019, Rubin and his assistant, Jennifer Powers, lured women—often Playboy models or escorts—into his Manhattan penthouse, where a bedroom was converted into a soundproofed “sex dungeon.” According to the indictment, women were tied up, drugged, beaten, and electrocuted, sometimes until they lost consciousness. Prosecutors say Rubin spent over $1 million on this network, while Powers arranged encounters and dismissed victims’ complaints by telling them to use ice or bruise cream. Rubin has pleaded not guilty, but he previously lost a $4 million civil judgment in 2022 after several women accused him of sexual assault. Once a high-profile Wall Street trader featured in Liar’s Poker, Rubin previously held senior roles at Salomon Brothers, Merrill Lynch, Bear Stearns, and Soros Fund Management. A judge has ordered Rubin to remain in custody as a flight risk, while Powers will enter her plea in court this week. Both face life in prison if convicted.
