@alexhollings52: The SR-71’s reported top speed was Mach 3.3, but it definitely flew faster than that… and now, NASA may be aiming to push it all the way to Mach 4. #airforce #military #Tech #aviation #usmilitary
I’m hoping that you could clear up something for me. At 70,000 feet where this aircraft is capable of flying, the outside air temperature is approximately -70°F. So why is there a cooling problem?

The SR-71 is being used to test the new engines. Why design and build an entire new airframe when you already have one sitting there. It’s the only theory that makes sense.

If they do I think they should invite all of us who was fortunate enough to be in the SR-71 program to the first flight. I’m 77 and I would love to see it fly just one more time.

Hypothetically, if you caught a mosquito to the face at mach 3.5, would you still have a head?

The problem with the J58s was the bypass tubes. They served their purpose at the time but a far more efficient circumferential bypass system could easily be designed today. The inlet shockwave is a far easier problem to solve.

There is zero credible evidence that they are trying to return it to flying condition. Also, the JP-7 fuel production equipment was destroyed back in the late 90s.

cheaper to use a new gen engine in a old frame then to build a brand new from the ground up, any car guy knows that

I drive past an SR-71 every day at the museum located at the former Castle Air Force Base. It would be so rad to find it “missing” one day😏

When they announced the "missing" blackbird from the hanger I had a theory that they were gonna test new engines on it. The real question i have is are they gonna use these new engines on the new x plane that's being developed? The Sr-71 is definitely a testbed aircraft and the fact it's the A version is gonna be the best thing to happen in recent times
