@eriksinger513: 4 cool things about the Manchester happY vowel - the sound at the end of words like happy, city, Mike Somerby. Two bonus cool things: 1. Manc happY also doesn’t show any gender variation. With stable consonant variables, like with TH sounds or -ing endings, men use them more than women. And with vowel sounds in the middle of change—and again, this is most sociolinguistically interesting vowel sounds linguists have ever observed—women are almost always in the lead of the change. But here: total gender equality. 2. Sheffield and Nottingham are the two other Northern English cities that have very open happY vowels. (And finally: yes, I do know that Phil Dunster, the actor who plays Jamie Tartt in Ted Lasso, isn't from Manchester. But he's hilarious, the accent's pretty solid, if slightly heightened, and this sound comes through particularly clearly.) #accents #dialects #sociolinguistics #Manchesteraccents #NotthernEnglishaccents

As someone called Molly who moved to Manchester, it's taken a long time to get used to being called Molleh. I know lots of people who live here who would choose not to give their children names ending in -y or -ie to avoid it

I grew up 15 miles from Manchester but lived in Manc for many years. My name there gets the glottal stop and the eh at the end. Being called Ki’eh makes me feel warm and fuzzy - love the Manc accent.

And it translates into different languages. I knew a northerner here in Sweden and when he’d say “nu kör vi” (noo shur vee) he’d pronounce it noo shur veh. 😅

So weird to see you talk about my people. This topic absolutely fascinates me. Seen you on YouTube multiple times talking about other accents and now you are breaking down something I’m exposed to all day everyday. Much love.

This accent is actually pretty new. Just a few decades ago we sounded very much like the average Lancastrian. Northern! Proper Northern. But then the tongue got lazier when an amalgamation of the overflow of families from the cities of Manchester and Liverpool came together in Whythenshawe and this new accent came to the forefront. I’m a Manc but I don’t talk like that!

It’s been used when talking about Manchester City, with other fans writing it as Citeh rather than City.

I live in Australia now and people notice the “uh” sound that I use in words like “duck” or “brother” or “husband” which is very different from how Australians say it. I dropped the “eh” vowel for the more standard “ee” many years ago so people identify the “uh” sounds in my accent as the most prominent feature
