@olgashimko94: Did You Know? Morro Bay is a small California coastal town with a history that feels more like a movie plot than an ordinary beach destination. Little-known historical facts: • During World War II, this area had a military past that many tourists today know nothing about: more than 45,000 service members trained at a U.S. Navy base to carry out amphibious landings on enemy shores. • In 1941, a Japanese submarine sank an American oil tanker near San Simeon. The entire crew survived. • The famous rock was once an island! It wasn’t until the 1930s that construction began on a man-made causeway connecting it to the mainland. • The town earned the unusual nickname “Three Stacks and a Rock.” Three enormous power plant smokestacks and the rock were iconic symbols of the town for decades. • In the 1870s, the founder of the modern town planted eucalyptus trees from seeds brought from Tasmania to protect the soil from strong winds. • After the war, the former military base even had a racetrack. Today, few visitors know about this chapter of local history. It’s amazing how many stories a small town can hide behind its peaceful appearance.
