FROM SNOW WELLS TO PROTECTED HERITAGE In the 1800s, communities around Akçaabat in Turkey’s Black Sea region collected mountain snow and stored it in wells to help make ice cream before modern refrigeration existed. That tradition developed into Trabzon Dondurması, a regional ice cream made with cow’s milk, sugar and salep. Unlike conventional white ice cream, its traditional preparation produces a distinctive caramel-like color and flavor. On September 17, 2026, Trabzon Dondurması received official geographical-indication registration from the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, recognizing its regional identity, ingredients and production methods. The protection does not require producers to return to mountain snow or historical equipment. Instead, it establishes standards to preserve the ice cream’s defining characteristics for future generations. Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca says the club’s titles are “absolutely not” tainted, despite an independent commission finding the club guilty of breaching the majority of 115 Premier League charges. Maresca says he “completely trusts the club” and will discuss his future “when we win the appeal”. The commission found City guilty of financial rule breaches relating to the 2009-10 to 2017-18 seasons.
