Jesus and the Buddha lived centuries apart, from different cultures. They taught very different things about God, the self, and freedom. But they both spoke to the same human being. A human being who suffers. This post asks something simpler: Did they sometimes see the same truths about us? Hatred does not have to become more hatred. Jesus taught: “Love your enemies.” The Buddha taught: “Hatred is never appeased by hatred in this world. By non-hatred alone is hatred appeased.” This post is offered in the hope of building a small bridge of understanding between different traditions. Understanding does not require agreement. Perhaps we can still disagree deeply, while seeing one another a little more clearly and recognising the goodness that exists across different paths. Sources Jesus: Luke 6:27–28 — love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you Luke 6:36 — “Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful” Mark 7:21 — evil thoughts arising from within the human heart Matthew 7:3 — the speck and the beam Matthew 6:24 — “You can’t serve both God and Mammon” Luke 6:46 — “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and don’t do the things which I say?” Buddha: Dhammapada 5 — hatred is not appeased by hatred, but by non-hatred MN 21, Kakacūpama Sutta — the Simile of the Saw AN 6.63, Nibbedhika Sutta — “Intention, I tell you, is kamma” Dhammapada 252 — the faults of others are easy to see, one’s own are hard to see Dhammapada 216 — “From craving springs grief, from craving springs fear” Dhammapada 19 — reciting the teaching without living it #buddhistteachings #buddhawisdom #jesuschrist #jesus #jesusandbuddha
