@recycldstardust: Let’s take for a second and acknowledge exactly who Christopher Columbus was and how and why he became an ethnic icon for Italian Americans. First of all Italian Americans experienced extreme discrimination when they first immigrated to the United States and we cannot and will not erase that fact. But choosing Christopher Columbus., who was so hated by his own people that he was brought back to Spain and chains because of his mistreatment of all those around him, should not be the choice to represent what Italian American culture is or Italian achievement. When you idolize someone like him you’re erasing the suffering that he inflicted on Native American and indigenous groups. One discriminated group should not harm other. So on the second Monday of October, we don’t want to further perpetuate harm on indigenous and native Americans but we also don’t want to discard the experiences of Italian American. It’s important to know the true history of “Columbus day” and even if the history is uncomfortable, it doesn’t change. It’s modern day implications. #columbusday #nativeamerican #nativetiktok #IndigenousTikTok
