Professor Paradox :
In that first section of the video she said “you don’t get rich from hard work, you get rich from having capital” and your response was “Sure, you don’t get rich from working hard, but you make more money if you work more. However you will get rich if you have more capital” say like a land excavator you use in your example. So you are agreeing with her. Her second claim is that the maxim ‘people don’t wanna work anymore’ is a myth and then she gave you a caveat of people don’t wanna work for shitty wages. Your response was “i’m not sure about the premise.” which is agreeing with her. She’s not sure about the premise either. She’s saying the premise that people don’t want to work is a myth. Everybody wants to work they just don’t wanna work for shitty wages. Sure real wages have increased since 1979 but you’re conflating inflation with affordability of basic necessities. Inflation covers a large basket of goods and so yes, I may be able to afford things like technology now more than ever, but my ability to afford things like a house, land, and food is diminished because those goods can rise in price faster than the rest of the basket of commodities. Also, you’re assuming that in 1979 we were making enough money then. And we weren’t, which is why in part we expanded the credit system. The post war boom, had fizzled out and stagflation had set in. Not to mention that productivity has skyrocketed since the 70s and wages have not kept up with worker productivity. So we are producing more and getting less of the share of the production. Last thing I’ll say is she’s not arguing that generally you need to have poor people to make more money, the way capitalism is structured creates a class of economically vulnerable workers who have little choice but to accept low-paying jobs. Think about McDonald’s. These jobs are essential for functioning of the business, the people performing them are often paid wages insufficient to meet their basic needs. Economic desperation weakens workers’ bargaining power. When the alternative to accepting a poverty wage is homelessness or hunger, employment is technically voluntary, but the choice is made under duress.
