Donald Trump is easing sanctions on Russian diesel to bring down American fuel prices. Canada's prime minister is warning that the decision could help Vladimir Putin finance his war against Ukraine. And the numbers raise serious questions about what Washington is actually achieving. During an October 11 conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Mark Carney condemned the agreement, warning that additional Russian energy revenue would undermine efforts to end the war. Trump says Russia will release more than 300,000 metric tonnes of diesel immediately, with additional supplies expected in November. But according to Reuters, that initial shipment represents less than one day's diesel consumption by America's transportation sector. The deal also comes as Russia continues attacking Ukrainian energy infrastructure, leaving millions of civilians vulnerable as winter approaches. Canada is taking a different approach. Ottawa has imposed more than 3,500 sanctions related to Russia's aggression and has committed over $8.5 billion in military assistance to Ukraine. Carney assured Zelenskyy that Canada will maintain those sanctions and tighten them where effective. There's an important principle at stake here. Energy purchases generate revenue, and Russia can use that revenue to support its military operations. With Washington now easing restrictions, Canada is making clear that economic pressure on Moscow remains an essential part of defending Ukraine. #canada #ukraine (Source: Prime Minister's Office, Reuters, The Canadian Press)
