@theceoofcats: imagine being purchased, having no autonomy over your own life and having to live like that. rabbits want space to play. guinea pigs want space to run. fish want space to swim and enrichment. if you have to be told that you're weird. #fyp #dogs #cats #fish
Idk where my comment went 😅 but this is a proper (maybe slightly bigger than the average) hamster set up. Keep in mind, this doesn’t include the depth

Meanwhile my two goldfish thriving in their 55 gallon filtered tank that gets a manual 30% water change every Saturday. I think they are both 10 years old at this point. And carnivals giving away fish and small lizards as prizes?! How is that allowed?!?!

since they’re considered “small and low-maintenance” pets, the owners prioritize their own space over the animals’ space 💔 they don’t want a cage/tank that takes up a lot of their space, ironically.

Working in pet retail ripped away any faith in humanity I had, the entire mentality behind every single animal purchase is "I want it because I want it and I want it for as cheap as possible". Yes, even cats and dogs.

It hurts my heart with things like this. I just rescued a betta and he was living in Filth with fin rot. Unfortunately I couldn’t get the other one…. Humans… it’s been a month of still getting him back to health. He’s currently in a five gallon tank. I switched everything out to betta friendly decor and live plants. Facebook marketplace is wild I’m happy I at least helped one

its horrible in the reptile world. someone tried to surrender turtles that were living in a box. i had to have them put to forever sleep because of their poor health.

people don't think of animals as beings sadly. they don't care about the small spaces

My first bunny I rescued, lived in a hamster cage for her first five years. At the house of a dad who only saw his kids every other weekend. I had to teach her how to hop.

When I had a dwarf hamster this was her cage, she only went in the small plastic one on top when I did a deep clean. There are things I would change if I was to get another one, but this is the minimum size I find acceptable for a hamster.

And why do stores allow this?

unfortunately, for small mammals, the pet stores rarely sell appropriate set ups
so much of it is education.

in the case of fish I think people tend to think of them as decorations and not living creatures with needs. :( In general I think many people view pets as objects to own.

When I was a kid, 20 some odd years ago, we bought a guinea pig. We saw the little cages they had for them, said nope, and bought two of those super long totes and used one of the play tubes to connect them. Man my boy would sprint from one to the other doing thay sweet little chirp thing they do [Heartwarming]

I have the same beef with hamster Care most people buy essentially shoeboxes for them when they need big enclosures full of enrichment with at least 7 to 10 inches of bedding

This is exactly why I don't have guinea pigs or rabbits. I don't have enough real estate in my house to give them the space they deserve

I had a hairdresser that kept a fish inside a clock. Nothing in there except the fish, water, and clock hands. I didn't go back. :(

I don't understand this either, my leopard gecko is in an 120g (minimum recommended tank size is 40g) and I still feel like it's small

I'm in my lizard era. My daughter was gifted (😳) a baby bearded dragon in a horrible set up. I spent weeks and hundreds of dollars upgrading to a temporary enclosure. She'll need another upgrade at some point.
