The 0% capital gains bracket is one of the most underused tools in early retirement. "Taxable income" is what's left after deductions, and the gain itself counts toward it. With the 2026 standard deduction, a married couple could have up to about $131,100* of total income, gains included, and still pay 0% federal tax on their long-term gains. One catch: gains stack on top of your other income. So any LTCG above the limit is taxed at 15% or 20%. 📌 Some people do this: in a low-income year, sell winners up to the 0% line and buy them right back. It's called tax-gain harvesting. You pay $0 now and raise your cost basis, so future gains are smaller. Watch out for healthcare premiums though! 📌 Harvesting a loss instead?
