Indiana had not won a football game in Ann Arbor since 1967. Today they did. 1967 was also the last Big Ten title Indiana had before this man showed up. Curt Cignetti did not get a head coaching job until he was 49 years old. Nearly three decades as an assistant. Four of them at Alabama under Nick Saban. In 2011 he finally got a team of his own. Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Division II. That was his father's old school. Frank Cignetti Senior is in the College Football Hall of Fame. He ran IUP for 20 years and turned it into a Division II power. After he retired in 2005, the school did not win its conference again until his son got there and did it in 2012. Then Elon. Then James Madison. He won everywhere he went and nobody in a power conference called him for any of it. Indiana hired him in November of 2023, when he was 62. That program had one Rose Bowl in its entire history, and it came after the 1967 season. The first perfect regular season anybody at that school has ever had. The number one seed in the College Football Playoff. A Big Ten championship, their first since 1967. A national championship. Twenty-two wins in a row. And back to back national coach of the year awards. Nobody had ever won that twice in a row before him. Now the last eight days. The streak ended last Saturday, 19 to 15 against Ohio State, one completion short with a minute left. Then today it was 6 to 6 at the end of regulation against a Michigan team that has scored fewer points than anybody else in the Big Ten. It did not end against a great Michigan team and it did not end comfortably. It took overtime. It still ended. A man who was 49 before anybody let him run a program took the job nobody wanted, and in three seasons gave them a Big Ten title, a national championship and a win in Ann Arbor. Every one of those things was last done in 1967. When is the latest you have ever started something that worked. #cfb #CollegeFootball #cfbnews #indiana #indianafootball
