Running a good playtest is an essential skill for a game designer. Even in an age of automated testing, and formal testing methodologies, you will inevitably run your own tests whether it's trying out a small idea on a co-worker or having your whole team try out a new feature. "Thank you for agreeing to playtest my game. Before we get started I want to emphasize we are testing the game, not you. There's no wrong way to play, and nothing you do can be a mistake. Think out loud if you can. If you get stuck, I'm not going to help, and that's on purpose. I want to see what you'd do with zero help from me, because that's exactly what a real player will get." In addition it can be helpful to prompt players to think out loud. "While you play, it would be helpful if you narrate out your thought process out loud. If you go silent for a stretch I may prompt you and ask what you're thinking. This does not mean you are doing anything wrong, I just want to know what you're thinking" #gamedesign
