The AP reported her phone was seized and more than a dozen grand jury subpoenas issued, including to relatives, in a probe of possible problems with her immigration paperwork. No charges have been publicly announced in this case. The Justice Department called the search part of “an ongoing federal criminal investigation.” A separate Washington, D.C., inquiry concerns Omar’s financial disclosures; officials have not said whether the probes are connected. A prosecutor said, “there are several investigations going on” and, “If there was a crime that was committed, it will be prosecuted,” President Donald Trump criticized Omar at a rally, saying, “She’s a disaster. She comes in from a country without laws, without police, without military,” as some in the crowd chanted “deport.” He later called her a “terrible person” and a “terrible congresswoman.” Omar wrote, “Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement,” and, “For 10 years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced,” Democratic leaders called the search “deeply disturbing.” Their statement said, “For years, Donald Trump and far-right extremists have relentlessly targeted Congresswoman Omar with vile personal attacks and baseless accusations,” and, “Now, less than 30 days until the midterm election, his violent mass deportation machine has descended upon the home of a duly elected Member of Congress and her family.” A constitutional law professor said, “The U.S. government’s position has always been that if you have information there that is untrue, where you would not have been made a citizen, then you can be denaturalized,” adding that the proof standard is high. Omar became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2000 and represents Minnesota’s 5th District. A longstanding allegation about her marriage remains unproven; she denies it.
