@enjoythewalk: The night before the auction, he broke into his father’s garage with a key that still worked. The power had been shut off Tuesday. He parked his truck facing the open bay and let the headlights fall across the concrete. There was the oil stain beneath the lift. The calendar nobody had turned since August. His father’s jacket hanging beside the door, one sleeve inside out. By morning, strangers would be putting prices on everything. He had spent eleven months trying to keep the place open. Sold his motorcycle. Taken weekend shifts. Called customers who still owed money and listened to them promise Friday until he hated the sound of the word. Somewhere in the middle of it, grief had become paperwork. He could barely remember his father’s voice, but he knew the balance on every overdue bill. He went straight to the workbench. In the bottom drawer was the battered socket set his father had bought before he was born. He placed it in his truck, then returned for the jacket. That was supposed to be all. Instead, he sat on the concrete beneath the calendar and stayed there until the headlights began to dim. For a while afterward, he made himself difficult to find. Let calls ring. Bought groceries late enough to avoid familiar faces. When someone asked about the garage, he said it hadn’t worked out, as though he were talking about a restaurant he’d tried once. He took a job servicing delivery vans in a warehouse that smelled of rubber and burnt coffee. Every morning, he walked beneath another man’s name on the sign. His supervisor was younger than him. That bothered him more than he wanted to admit. On his third week, the supervisor handed back a repair order with three things circled. He felt heat rise into his face. He almost gave the speech about how long he’d been doing this, about the business he used to run, about everything the kid couldn’t possibly understand. Then he looked at the sheet again. All three corrections were right. He pulled the van back into the bay. The days accumulated without much ceremony. He learned the equipment. Asked questions he wished he already knew the answers to. Put money aside, then spent half of it when his truck needed a transmission. Some evenings, he sat in the parking lot before driving home, hands resting on the wheel, gathering enough patience to be decent to whoever called. Eventually, he started answering. An old customer asked if he could look at her car. She was working doubles at the hospital, and it had begun stalling at red lights. He fixed it in her driveway on a Saturday. The following week, her brother called. Then a neighbor. He bought a notebook to keep track of the jobs. For months, it lived on the passenger seat beside a thermos and his father’s socket set. One cold morning, a bolt snapped beneath a rusted pickup, and he barked out a laugh so sudden it startled him. He could almost hear his father swearing at the same damn thing. He lay there a moment, smiling up at the undercarriage, before reaching for another tool. Three years after the auction, he rented a small bay behind a tire shop. The ceiling leaked near the entrance. The bathroom door needed a shoulder to close. He read the lease twice before signing it, his stomach tight the whole time. On the first morning, he arrived early with coffee and a clean shirt. There were two appointments in the notebook. Enough money in the account to be careful with. No promise that this place would last. He hung his father’s jacket beside the door. Then he lifted the shutter. It caught halfway, forcing him to crouch beneath it and shove with both hands. Outside, a delivery driver was eating breakfast in his cab. Someone across the street was sweeping broken glass into a dustpan. The city was getting on with it. He stood in the doorway and drank his coffee while it was still hot. When the first customer pulled in, he knew her name. Enjoythewalk #enjoythewalk #bebetter #win #jesus #foryo
