@pchemstud: Lithium, sodium, potassium, calcium. Four metals, four beakers of water. One of them catches fire. 🔥 Which one did you expect to be the most violent? Every metal here reacts with water to make hydrogen gas and a base, and the thymolphthalein turns blue as the solution becomes basic. Potassium reacts so fast and so exothermically that it ignites the hydrogen. The samples all have a slight oxide coating, which slows the reaction a bit. #chemistry #alkalimetals #chemistrydemo #scienceexperiment #periodictable
These are not pure samples. Lithium has a instant violent reaction with water

Puggie :
If anyone is confused, the beakers contain water and an indicator that turns blue at a high pH. When alkali metals react with water, they produce a hydronium ion (H+) and a hydroxide ion (OH-). The hydroxide ion reacts with the metal to make a metallic hydroxide and the hydronium reacts with itself to produce hydrogen gas which you can see in the bubbling. The indicator turns blue when the pH is high enough from the hydroxides. Overall the reactions is: 2X + 2H2O -> 2XOH + H2

Interesting because IV potassium feels like that when it’s being infused so seeing it immediately ignite and water is accurate

I always knew that alkali metals react violently with water but never thought about the alkali earth metals

They’re alkali metals, same with the ones on group 2. They turn the water blue, did you put an indicator?
