@simonakeroydgardener: Plant some carnivorous plants in an old washing up tub. This is a great project to do with children at half term, although I would suggest an adult drills the drainage holes in the bottom of the washing up tub. I think this is a much more rewarding project to do for Halloween instead of buying short-term Halloween decorations. These plants, if looked after carefully, should last for a good few years. Carnivorous plants require a low nutrient, acidic compost. Specific carnivorous plant compost can be bought at garden centres or online. I mixed mine with a 50-50 mix with orchid bark. You can also add some moss into your mix. Carnivorous plants should be watered using rainwater. Don’t use tapwater as this can alter the pH and add nutrients. I planted Venus fly traps, a sundew and some pitcher plants (sarracenia). I keep my carnivorous plants outside all year round. However, I live on the English Riviera in South Devon where it is mild and we rarely get frost. If you live in cooler areas of the world, you might want to keep your carnivorous plants indoors for the colder months of the year.
