🇦🇺 “HER HEART AND HER MIND ARE IN GOOD SHAPE.” Helen Haines' husband Phil has delivered an extraordinarily moving update on his wife following Monday's horrific attack. The independent MP for Indi remains in a critical condition at Melbourne's Alfred Hospital. Her left leg was amputated on Monday. Doctors desperately hoped they could save her right leg. Today, Phil confirmed they could not. Helen Haines has now lost both legs. But amid an unimaginable few days for their family, Phil delivered the news that matters most: Helen is alive. And her family is beside her. Phil and Helen have been married for almost 40 years and were preparing to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary next month. They have three children — and two grandchildren born within just the past four months, including one only four weeks ago. Phil described the two parts of Helen that matter most to her family: Her heart and her mind. Her huge heart — compassionate, caring and loving. And her sharp intellect — always wanting to learn, read and understand. “We are grateful and thankful that, at this stage, both her heart and her mind are in good shape.” Phil thanked Helen's staff in Canberra, Wodonga and Wangaratta, the people who rushed to help, Victoria Police, paramedics, firefighters, Northeast Health and the extraordinary medical and nursing teams at The Alfred. He also thanked the people of Wangaratta, Indi and thousands of Australians — and people overseas — who have sent messages of support. And then came a beautiful little glimpse of Helen away from politics. She LOVES flowers. Only last week she planted hundreds of dahlia bulbs in their garden and shared bulbs with neighbours and family. But instead of sending flowers to hospital, her family has asked Australians who want to support Helen to consider donating to Save the Children. Why? Her final official appointment in Canberra last week was speaking at a Save the Children legacy lecture. It's a cause she passionately supports. Phil knows the road ahead will be long and difficult. But he also knows his wife: “She is a fighter.” For now, the family is taking things day by day. Governor-General Sam Mostyn stood beside Phil today — at his invitation — as a mark of support for a woman she knows and respects. 1 Whatever your politics, tonight this isn't about left or right. It's about Helen. A wife of almost 40 years. A mother. A new grandmother. A community representative. And a woman beginning an unimaginably difficult road to recovery. Keep fighting, Helen. 🇦🇺 #HelenHaines #Indi #Wangaratta #FYP #FYPpage
