He did in fact know how to win that battle😭 || #war #wingedhussars #poland #History #battleofvienna John III Sobieski (Polish: Jan III Sobieski (Polish pronunciation: ['jan 'tsatçi so'b'askil); Lithuanian: Jonas III Sobieskis (Lithuanian pronunciation: ['joinäs so'b'askis]); Latin: Joannes III Sobiscius (Latin pronunciation: [joannes so'bijius]) 17 August 1629 - 17 June 1696) was King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania from 1674 until his death in 1696. The Battle of Vienna a took place at Kahlenberg Mountain near Vienna on 12 September 1683 " after the city had been besieged by the Ottoman Empire for two months. The battle was fought between an Ottoman army commanded by Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa Pasha and a coalition of Imperial, German and Polish Crown forces under the overall command of King John Ill Sobieski of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The main Lithuanian army did not arrive in time to participate in the battle. The Polish hussars (/ha'zars/; Polish: husaria [xu'sarja]), a alternatively known as the winged hussars, were an elite heavy cavalry formation active in Poland and in the Polish- Lithuanian Commonwealth from 1503 to 1702. Their epithet is derived from large rear wings, which were intended to demoralize the enemy during a charge. The hussars ranked as the elite of Polish cavalry until their official disbanding in 1776.
