HIV AWARENESS IS NOT OPTIONAL. IT IS A NECESSITY. With 218 reported HIV cases in BARMM, including 77 students, 200 individuals categorized as having multiple partners, and 192 MSM (men who have sex with men), we need to take HIV and STI awareness seriously. As an HIV advocate, I believe it is time for BARMM to strengthen and open more campaigns on HIV and STI awareness, especially in Senior High Schools and among young people of legal age. Our youth deserve access to accurate, age appropriate, and science based information about HIV transmission, prevention, testing, and treatment. We cannot continue to remain silent about HIV. The lack of awareness, stigma, and misinformation can prevent people from getting tested and seeking treatment. HIV education should not be a one time activity or something we only discuss when cases increase. It must be a continuous effort in schools, communities, and health facilities. Awareness saves lives. Education prevents transmission. Early testing and treatment make a difference. As an advocate, I call on BARMM leaders, the Ministry of Health, local government units, schools, and community organizations to invest in regular HIV and STI awareness campaigns and accessible, confidential testing services. Let us protect our youth through education, not silence. Let us replace stigma with understanding and discrimination with compassion. Because every number represents a human being, a family, and a life that deserves care, dignity, and protection.
