I had to crawl across dirty floors just to take part in my future sister-in-law’s hen do. Not because I wanted to, but because I didn’t want to ruin her special weekend. The companies we booked should have been accessible, but they weren’t. As one of the bridesmaids, I helped organise the weekend. What I didn’t expect was how difficult it would be to find activities in London that were actually wheelchair accessible. We were told: 😩 “The lift’s broken.” 😩 “Yes, we’re accessible, as long as you can manage the stairs.” 😩 “A wheelchair user counts as four people.” Months after being told a lift was “temporarily” out of order, it still hadn’t been fixed, so I bum shuffled up concrete steps to join everyone. Then came the biggest shock. We’d booked the London Eye River Cruise in advance. They knew I was a wheelchair user. I even had to register my access requirements and details before attending. When we arrived, a staff member looked me up and down and asked, “I know you’re in that, but you can walk upstairs, right?” No. Only then was I told the lift had been broken for over nine weeks. Nine weeks… and nobody thought to let me know beforehand? Instead, my options were to sit with one friend in a corridor while everyone else enjoyed the cruise… or crawl down the dirty stairs so I could be with them. I chose the floor. The frustrating part is that I could make it work. Many wheelchair users couldn’t. Their day would simply have been over. Accessibility isn’t a luxury. It’s not a favour. It’s a right. I’m sharing this because these barriers are still happening every single day and people deserve better. Despite everything, we still had an incredible weekend celebrating Charlotte and I honestly can’t wait for the wedding. ❤️ Have you ever turned up somewhere that claimed to be accessible… only to find it wasn’t? @London Eye I hope you’ve made that phone call. #grwm #calltoaction #storytime #london #wheelchairgirl
