But the protests did **not** begin because of Muslims or Islam. They began with students, teachers, and families raising alarms about overcrowded classrooms, teacher shortages, deteriorating school conditions, rising living costs, inequality, and declining public services. French authorities have blamed parts of the violence on ultra-left groups and criminal activity—not Muslim communities.
