We were in class from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. every single day. Yes, including evenings. No Rest. The goal was clear: get fluent, fast. At first, we learned basic vocabulary. But here’s the twist: after just one month, our teachers stopped speaking English. Entirely. They told us: ”I know you guys are not ready to speak Chinese. I know you‘re not ready to understand it. After just four months, I passed HSK 4 (intermediate level). By month eight, I passed HSK 5 (advanced level) —which allowed me to enter a Chinese university in Shanghai. Yes, Chinese is one of the hardest languages for Westerners— I‘m Italian. Yes, it was exhausting.
