@roshellezielinski: Some of the most valuable plants in traditional herbal wellness are the ones our ancestors have been using for generations. Growing up Jamaican, cerasee was one of those bush teas you didn't question. You knew it was going to be bitter, but you also knew it held a special place in our traditional wellness practices. 😂 Bitter melon (Momordica charantia) goes by several names depending on where you are in the world, including cerasee, bitter gourd, bitter cucumber, balsam pear, karela, and goya. In Jamaica and throughout the Caribbean, we commonly refer to the vine and its leaves as cerasee, while the fruit is known as bitter melon. Both bitter melon and burdock root have unique properties, from naturally occurring antioxidants to compounds being studied for their potential roles in metabolic and digestive health. But what I love most is their versatility beyond the teacup! Bitter melon can be sautéed, stuffed, stir-fried, or added to soups and curries. It's especially popular in Asian and Caribbean cooking. Burdock root has a delicious earthy flavor and can be roasted, pickled, braised, or added to soups and stews. It's also a wonderful source of prebiotic fiber, particularly inulin, which helps nourish beneficial gut bacteria. Traditional knowledge deserves to be preserved, but understanding how these plants work and using them responsibly is just as important. Have you ever tried cerasee or burdock root? If so, how do you prepare yours? Herbal reminder: Bitter melon may lower blood sugar and interact with diabetes medications. #jamaicanbushmedicine #bittermelon #burdockroot #cerasee #jamaicanbushtea
