Based on court proceedings from April 2026, the story of 13-month-old Preston Davey is a criminal case regarding the abuse and murder of a baby in the UK by his prospective adoptive parents.  Background and Adoption Birth and Early Life: Preston Davey was born on June 16, 2022, and was initially placed in foster care. He was described as a "perfectly healthy," "gorgeous, happy, and alert" child. In April 2023, at nine months old, Preston was placed with Jamie Varley, 37, and his partner John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, in Blackpool, Lancashire, for adoption. The Defendants: Varley was a high school teacher (formerly at South Shore Academy) and head of year.  Abuse and Death (March–July 2023)   During the less than four months in their care, the court heard Preston was "routinely ill-treated, sexually abused, and physically assaulted". Injuries: A post-mortem examination revealed Preston sustained approximately 40 traumatic injuries, including 30 external bruises, a fractured arm, and injuries to his mouth, throat, and bottom. Hospital Visits: Before his death, the baby was admitted to hospital three times for injuries, including breathing difficulties and a fractured arm, which the couple explained away, the court heard. Final Day (July 27, 2023): Varley, who was home alone, allegedly murdered Preston by smothering him. The prosecution alleged that on the day of his death, Varley filmed a video of the child, who was suffering from severe respiratory distress, without trying to help him. Hospitalization: The couple brought an unconscious, unresponsive Preston to Blackpool Victoria Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His cause of death was acute upper airway obstruction, likely due to smothering.  Court Proceedings (2025–2026) Charges: Jamie Varley is accused of murder, manslaughter, assault by penetration, cruelty, grievous bodily harm, and taking indecent photos of a child. John McGowan-Fazakerley is accused of causing or allowing the death of a child, child cruelty, and sexual assault. Trial: The trial began in April 2026 at Preston Crown Court, with both men denying all charges.
