Sweet Potato Slump is the gooey, bubbling cousin of cobbler that quietly disappeared from everyday Black Southern baking 🍠🔥 Slumps were faster than pie, easier to stretch, and perfect for church suppers, family gatherings, and post-harvest meals. This self-saucing version bakes into layers — tender sweet potatoes, caramel syrup, and a soft golden topping — with bubbling edges that make it impossible to ignore. 🍠 Sweet Potato Slump (Self-Saucing Butter Cobbler) Preheat oven to 375°F / 190°C Butter a 9×13-inch metal baking dish Filling • 5 cups sweet potatoes, peeled & cubed (750–800 g) • 1¼ cups packed brown sugar (250 g) • ½ cup granulated sugar (100 g) • 2¼ cups hot water (530 ml) • 6 tbsp unsalted butter, cut into pieces (85 g) • 1 tsp cinnamon • ½ tsp nutmeg • ½ tsp salt • 1 tsp vanilla extract Simmer everything except vanilla for 10–12 minutes until potatoes are just tender. Stir in vanilla. Pour potatoes and syrup into baking dish. Scatter butter on top. Do not stir. Batter • 1¼ cups all-purpose flour (155 g) • 1 cup granulated sugar (200 g) • 2 tsp baking powder • ½ tsp salt • 1 cup milk (240 ml) • 5 tbsp melted butter (70 g) Whisk until smooth and pourable. Assemble Pour batter evenly over hot filling. Do NOT stir. Bake Bake uncovered 45–55 minutes until golden and aggressively bubbling. Rest 5–10 minutes before scooping. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or evaporated milk. #BlackHistory #LearnOnTikTok #FoodTok #SouthernCooking #RecipeRevival

She built millions in sales without needing investors or debt to get started. Jenny Holten started Strange Grains, a gluten free bakery, after recognizing a gap in the market from her own experience with coeliac disease. She began baking in a small commercial kitchen and built the business around a very specific customer who desperately wanted better gluten free bread. By the time she entered Shark Tank Australia at 69, Strange Grains had already reached around $`1 million in annual sales. She wasn't walking into the Tank with just an idea. She had years of proof that customers wanted what she was selling. The Sharks questioned whether such a niche business could scale, but her numbers made the pitch difficult to ignore. She asked for `$350,000 for 10%, and Naomi Simson ultimately offered $350,000 for 25%, which Jenny accepted. What makes her story so valuable is how deeply she understood her customer. She didn't try to sell to everyone. She found a specific problem, became extremely good at solving it, and built a loyal market around it. You don't always need a massive audience or huge funding to build something valuable. Sometimes knowing exactly who you're serving is enough to build something far bigger than anyone expected.
