@sirpinkbeard: Three ways to handle character death in D&D. character death can be a bit complicated to handle at your table, but I think using shorter campaigns, letting the death breathe, and enforcing character concept death will do a lot to help the character death feel more natural and work better with the overall campaign.#dungeonmaster #dnd2024 #dnd5e #dnd #dungeonsanddragons

Super against asking anyone to ever sit out. I don't care how much it serves the story, the point is to play and have fun with your friends but can't do that if they're not there

How do you stop your party from party from "spamming" long rests ? like sure they might fight in the morning, but what is stopping them from going back to the tavern/camp after that and chilling the whole day there to long rest and go out the next morning to fight again ?

I agree with your points except asking a player to sit out. While I do agree with your point about it, it also seems like punishing a player who has died.

I had 1 character that was a changeling. I just didn't like the way the character was(my 1st time as a spellcaster). it was level 3 and I was killed during a fight as the other characters finished the fight my body liquefied so they couldn't save me. Then my next character was saved from a jail that bad guys had. was kinda fun.

having someone losing their character and then you forbid people from playing sounds just unfair and mean

for context i’m in a JJK campaign. my character died in combat, dm didn’t even mean to kill me, i thought he died, i was then brought back as a cursed spirit by TBBG, i lost nearly all the souls i had collected at that moment (aside from one or two) now everyone including me thought that was it for me it was a really really sad death scene and in turn my character now has a deeper understanding that he has finite time on the earth he had seen others die around him but never came to terms with his own mortality. and the DM brought me back as a cursed spirit without even asking me which imo was a good move because i had the grief of dying but also the shock of coming back

It also helps to..not run a long campaign epic quest. There is no "quest line" in my campaign, it is fully driven by character motivation. I think the colloquial term is a "West Marches" campaign, where I just create the world and the players decide what they want to do in it. Just over 4 years later and there have been 3 character deaths and 3 character retirements. My requirements are that if you introduce a character, they need to have a built in reason to align with the goals of the party's current trajectory to reduce introduction friction. They've slain devils, fought necromancers, allied with tyrannical dragons in the underdark, crowned a new eladrin queen, saved a human princess from assassination, negotiated with a beholder, died, been undead, regained their mortality, and so much more. In the words of Matthew Colville: "This is a fantasy world; death is not the end."

I’ve played some monsters for my DM sometimes, if my character died somewhere far removed, and I’m a fairly experienced player atp

I never even thought about a player coming back with the same class, race, and subclass. I’ve never even had players come back as the same class, they usually think up a new and fun character that is completely different so they can spice up how they play.

kicking your player out for multiple sessions is just overly punishing and not fair to the player.

instead of asking a player to not play (which breaks their connection to the game) have them play an NPC.

i actualy relatively fixed that issue by haveing a set of high wizards who will at a cost do a revivify spell on them so it allows me too send them on quests that i fought of and wanted too do and it gives a meaning too the death and i have this npc character with them so when ever someone dies they can play the npc for a bit

My goblin fighter died last session. This was the last session when the party was in a city, so my DM brought in my Leonin Cleric, but she was away from the party for a good few hours, before seeing the party leave and following them because it was weird (our monk was in drag). She got a whole lore dump- rolled a wis save and now she has a impending break down in about 2 months incoming

ive recently been trying out wfrp 4e (Warhammer fantasy) and its been alottt of character deaths and i think ill show my gm this. anytime we die we rush in new characters so nobody misses and the party isn't short for encounters but it has lead to some characters feeling like "why are we even here???" my current character just to keep our numbers up is essentially just a hobo they pulled out of a evil plague ridden castle and is just actively trying to be useful for the team 🤣

Honestly I think an underrated way is just accepting and embracing the revolving door as a core part of the game. That said, 5e shoots itself in the foot by making character creation a very intricate and drawn-out process

I had a character in a game one of few characters that survived nearly to the end when he “left” the party my very next character in the next session died immediately as a gag I did sit out for a bit guest starring as quick villain this has little to do with the topic at hand I just like talking about it

I think the solution is that death is used as a plot device as long as the player wants their character to return. Give thw party a way of bringing them back but make it a hard journey or require sacrifice
