OPPOSITION LEADER, 14 MPs AND HUNDREDS OF GUYANESE PICKET CANADIAN HIGH COMMISSION AND U.S. EMBASSY, DEMANDING INTERNATIONAL INTERVENTION AND JUSTICE Georgetown, Guyana | Tuesday, October 20, 2026 The Office of the Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Azruddin Mohamed, M.P., joined by 13 other Members of Parliament, including MP Sherod Duncan, and hundreds of Guyanese, participated in two stages of peaceful picketing exercises outside the Canadian High Commission and the United States Embassy this morning, calling for urgent international intervention following the assassination attempt on the life of the Opposition Leader on October 12, 2026, by Special Branch Head Prem Narine. Protesters carried strongly worded placards demanding the immediate release and preservation of all CCTV footage, the arrest and independent investigation of Senior Superintendent Prem Narine, and the revocation of his Canadian and United States visas, along with those of CID Officer Rodwell Sarabo. Sarabo, who was present on the night of the shooting, has also been implicated in allegations surrounding the planting of a firearm in the Opposition Leader's vehicle, which demands immediate, transparent and independent forensic investigation. Protesters further called for Narine's deportation from Canada, subject to applicable law, and his return to Guyana to face investigation into the serious allegations against him. Eight days after gunfire struck the vehicle carrying Guyana's constitutional Leader of the Opposition and his two employees, Eugene Thorne and Mario Mohamed, protesters expressed outrage at the Government of Guyana's failure to address the assassination attempt with the seriousness, transparency and accountability it demands. The protesters questioned why critical Government CCTV footage remains unavailable to the public, why the officers implicated have not been subjected to an independent investigation, and why the international community has remained largely silent on allegations involving the safety of a constitutional office-holder. They warned that the political persecution and victimisation of Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed, combined with serious concerns about the independence of national institutions, have profound implications for democracy, constitutional governance and the rule of law in Guyana. Families of victims and survivors of the MV Barima tragedy also stood among the protesters, making emotional and forceful appeals for justice more than three months after the disaster. The Office demanded the immediate salvage and flotation of the MV Barima, the release of the three detained crew members, and financial compensation for all 179 victims, survivors and affected families. The Office also renewed calls for the immediate resignation and removal of Ministers Juan Edghill and Deodat Indar over their failures that led to the deadly tragedy. The Office also demanded an end to political victimisation and persecution, independent investigations allegations of corruption and misconduct involving Government officials and political appointees, including the Director of Public Prosecutions, Commissioner of Police and Government Ministers, and the removal of Deputy Commissioner of Police Karim Baksh from his position pending serious and independent investigations. The demonstrations reflected the anger and frustration expressed by Guyanese over what protesters described as a growing pattern of institutional failures, selective justice, political interference and a lack of accountability. The central message delivered outside both diplomatic missions was unmistakable: the assassination attempt of the Opposition Leader on October 12 must not be ignored, the evidence must be preserved, and those implicated must be independently investigated, regardless of their political connections, official positions or authority.@Odessa Primus @Hana Khamelia @azruddinmohamedofficial @Nation_Bezzle_777🌪
