Remembering Tom Skerritt (1933–2026). Tom Skerritt died on October 21, 2026, at the age of 93. To remember him, we're sharing a scene from Top Gun (1986), transferred from our original VHS copy of the movie. Skerritt played Commander Mike "Viper" Metcalf, one of the experienced officers responsible for training the Navy's fighter pilots. In this scene, he talks with Maverick, played by Tom Cruise, about Maverick's father and his military service. It's an important part of the movie because Maverick finally begins to learn more about what happened to his father. Skerritt began his film career in the early 1960s. Over the following decades, he appeared in a wide range of movies, including M*A*S*H (1970), Alien (1979), Steel Magnolias (1989), and A River Runs Through It (1992). He also starred in the CBS television drama Picket Fences, winning an Emmy Award in 1993 for his role as Sheriff Jimmy Brock. Before his acting career, Skerritt served in the U.S. Air Force. His military background is an interesting connection to Top Gun, even though the movie itself focuses on Navy pilots.
