The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), through its Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) in Mpumalanga, has secured a provisional restraint order over assets currently estimated at R99 million linked to taxi boss Joe “Ferrari” Sibanyoni and others allegedly involved in organised criminal activities, including extortion. The order was obtained on 28 September 2026 by the AFU at the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court in Middelburg under Section 26 of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act 121 of 1998 (POCA). The operation involved collaboration between the NPA’s Asset Forfeiture Unit, its Organised Crime Unit and the South African Police Service (SAPS), following investigations into alleged extortion and related offences. According to the NPA, the uncapped provisional restraint order covers movable and immovable property valued at approximately R99 million. The authority alleges that the assets constitute realisable property and represent benefits derived from criminal activities. The restraint order is intended to preserve the assets while the legal process continues and prevent those affected from freely disposing of them. The assets reportedly include properties in exclusive golf estates in Centurion, as well as houses and estate properties in Centurion and Pretoria. Several luxury vehicles are also covered by the order, including Ferraris, a Porsche, a Lexus, Mercedes-Benz vehicles and BMWs. The defendants are further required to surrender various bank accounts and investments to a curator appointed by the court to oversee the restrained assets. The NPA says the action advances the objectives of POCA, which include depriving individuals of the proceeds and benefits of crime. The authority has warned that organised crime, particularly extortion, threatens South Africa’s economy and communities by undermining legitimate businesses, discouraging investment and obstructing economic growth. The restraint order is a provisional legal measure and does not amount to a criminal conviction. The allegations against Sibanyoni and the other parties remain subject to the legal process, and any criminal liability must be established in court.
