🚨 Carragher on Bruno Fernandes: “I’ve been listening to this argument about Bruno Fernandes for months now, and I don’t understand what some people are trying to prove. They’ve been telling us he’s the problem at United. That the team would be better without him. That everything goes through him, that United can’t function properly when he’s playing. Fine. That’s their argument. Well, he didn’t play today, did he? He sat on the bench for 90 minutes, and they lost 3-0 to Bournemouth. So what happened? Where was this brilliant United team we’ve been promised once Bruno Fernandes was taken out of it? Because I watched the game. I didn’t see it. And before somebody starts telling me, ‘Well, Jamie, they weren’t playing particularly well when Bruno was starting either.’ I know that. I’ve got eyes. But that’s a completely different argument. You told us Bruno was the reason United were struggling. You didn’t say he was one of several players who needed to improve. You said he was holding the team back. There’s a difference. I remember having this conversation with somebody who was convinced United needed to move on from him. I asked him, ‘Right, you sell Bruno tomorrow. What happens next?’ He said, ‘The team becomes more balanced.’ I said, ‘And who’s creating the chances?’ He couldn’t answer me. ‘Who’s getting the assists? Who’s taking responsibility when the team’s struggling? Who’s going to produce something when nobody’s had a decent effort on goal?’ Nothing. And that’s what annoys me about this discussion. People talk about getting rid of players as if the moment you remove somebody, all the problems disappear with him. It’s nonsense. Bruno was producing extraordinary numbers last season. Creating chances, getting assists, winning individual awards, carrying enormous responsibility in a team that wasn’t functioning properly. Everybody was happy to celebrate those performances. Now his form has dropped, and suddenly he’s responsible for every problem. How does that work? I’ve criticised Bruno. I’ve questioned his body language, his decision making, his leadership. But I can criticise a player without pretending he’s the reason an entire football club has been struggling for years. That’s where people lose me. And the funny thing is, Carrick had him warming up today. He was getting himself ready, but he never came on. I’m glad he didn’t, actually. Because now we can have this conversation without somebody finding a way to blame him for the result. Although I’m sure somebody will try. They’ll probably tell us he looked miserable on the bench and that affected the other players. You laugh, but that’s where we’ve got to. United have problems all over the pitch. Players making mistakes, poor decisions, a lack of urgency, not enough quality in important moments. You don’t fix all that by dropping one midfielder. If you’re telling me Bruno isn’t good enough anymore, fair enough. Make your case. Tell me who should replace him and why that player would improve Manchester United. That’s a football discussion. But don’t tell me he’s destroying the team, then watch the team get beaten 3-0 without him and start explaining why his absence proves absolutely nothing. You can’t have it both ways. Bruno isn’t above criticism. Nobody at United should be. But some supporters have spent so long trying to prove he’s the problem that they’ve forgotten to look at the actual problems. And that’s a dangerous place for a football club to be. Because one day Bruno will leave. That’s football. And if United are still playing like this, who are they going to blame then? The man who isn’t even at the club anymore? At some point, you have to stop looking for one person to blame and start asking why the entire team isn’t good enough. Today, Bruno didn’t kick a ball. Manchester United still lost 3-0. Maybe it’s time some people started asking themselves whether they’ve been arguing about the wrong thing.” [ This is the source @ChinoUTD ]
