A 17-year-old Florida girl named Addison Bethea was scalloping in about five feet of water off Keaton Beach in June 2022 when a nine-foot shark latched onto her right leg and dragged her under. Recovery was brutal, but Addison set a goal from her hospital bed: walk onto her school's homecoming football field in her senior year, without crutches. She did exactly that, on a prosthetic leg, three months after the attack. She also cheered at a football game, graduated by walking across the stage independently, and one year later returned to the same stretch of water off Keaton Beach with Rhett by her side. She got back in the ocean and felt completely normal. Now she wants to become a rehabilitation therapist, inspired by her own recovery.
